World number one Scottie Scheffler makes the trip to Northern Ireland as the favourite for what would be his first ever Open Championship title, and his second major victory of the calendar year.
The three-time major winner has finished in the top 10 of every tournament he’s entered since late March, including victories at three events in that time, most notably at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow as well as the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.
Rory McIlroy, competing in his home country, starts the week as second favourite for the Open Championship in what has been a momentous year for the 36-year-old after his Masters victory in April saw him become just the sixth man to achieve the Career Grand Slam.
The five-time major winner heads into the major fresh for a T2 finish at the Genesis Scottish Open last weekend and a T6 finish at the Travelers Championship in his two tournaments since the US Open.
Third favourite for a first ever Open title is the Spaniard Jon Rahm who’s enjoying a strong year so far, including a second place finish at LIV Andalucia last weekend, and is quite fancied for a win at Royal Portrush this weekend.
The two-time major winner has finished outside the top 10 only thrice August 2023 across all 21 strokeplay tournaments he’s entered.
Englishman Tommy Fleetwood is touted as the fourth favourite for the Open, being held at Royal Portrush for the first time since 2019 when Shane Lowry was crowned champion, with Fleetwood finishing in second.
The 34-year-old came so close to winning his first PGA Tour event at the Travelers Championship at the end of last month, leading heading into the final hole before bogeying to finish tied second, but can take confidence from his strong performance throughout the week.
