England suffered an early scare at the European Women’s Championship, but back-to-back victories over the Netherlands and Wales sent them through to the quarter-finals as Group D runners-up.

Sweden stand between the Lionesses and a place in the semis. Who will come out on top in this massive knockout match in Zurich?

Sweden Women vs England Women predictions

Some England fans feared the worst after their 2-1 defeat by France on matchday one of the Euro 2025 group stage.

The scoreline suggests a narrow loss, but while it is true that England rallied late on and almost forced an equaliser, they were outclassed by France for much of the match.

That setback meant England had to beat the Netherlands in their second outing to regain control. That is exactly what they did – and with aplomb too.

Sarina Wiegman’s women scored four goals without reply to move up to second in the group, which is where they finished following a 6-1 victory over Wales last time out.

Of course, topping the group was the target and England fell short of that. But there is no need to be too down on the team. After all, they have just won back-to-back games by four- and five-goal margins. England look to be back to their best.

Wiegman has certainly been pleased with how her team have performed in their last two matches. She described the performance against the Dutch as “proper England”.

After the Wales game, the manager said she was pleased with how quickly England started and how many opportunities they fashioned.

“It is really good to see that we created so many chances,” Wiegman told the media “You can see the connections. It is nice to see more players who can score goals and that they keep doing things together. This is an intense tournament, and we played a top-level game straight away.”

Needless to say, this will be a much sterner examination of England’s credentials. Sweden finished top of Group C after picking up maximum points courtesy of triumphs over Denmark (1-0), Poland (3-0) and Germany (4-1).

That success against the Germans was particularly impressive given Sweden went into the match as slight underdogs, only to blow their opponents away in Zurich.

Sweden are on a 15-match unbeaten run, so they will carry confidence and momentum into Thursday’s clash. But they too will be in for a tougher 90 minutes against England, the defending champions who are aiming to go all the way in Switzerland.

This promises to be a gripping contest between two teams who will look to stamp their authority on the game. This is a tie which feels like it could easily go either way.

Sweden Women vs England Women betting tips

Only one of Sweden or England will compete in the semi-finals of this summer’s Euros.

England to win

Sweden played some excellent stuff in the group stage. They have scored seven times in their last two games and will have gained a huge amount of belief from that resounding victory over 10-player Germany.

But this will be a psychological test as well as a footballing one. Sweden lost 4-0 to England in the semi-finals of Euro 2022 and they fell at this stage of the competition five years earlier.

Having won the last Euros and reached the final of the 2023 World Cup, England know what it takes to negotiate high-stakes knockout ties.

That should give them the edge over Sweden, who are capable of causing England problems but may nevertheless come up short.

Over 2.5 goals

Sweden demonstrated their attacking quality against Germany last time out. Granted, their opponents had a player sent off in the 31st minute, but Peter Gerhardsson’s side had already scored twice by then.

England started the tournament sluggishly with that underwhelming display against France, but they were back to their best in an attacking sense against the Netherlands and Wales.

This bet would have paid out in each of England’s three group games, as well as in two of Sweden’s three outings up to now.

There are no more second chances now that we have reached the knockout stage, so once a team goes behind they will have to start taking risks to get back level. That is good news for the neutrals.

Lauren Hemp to score any time

Lauren Hemp has started all three games for England at Euro 2025 and she is expected to be in the XI once again on Thursday.

Hemp got her name on the scoresheet against Wales, taking her tally for her country to 19 in 67 caps.

That is a solid rather than spectacular return for the Manchester City forward, but she represents terrific value in the anytime scorer market.

Alessio Russo and Lauren James – the other members of England’s front three – are seen as more likely goal-getters by the bookies, but we reckon it is well worth a punt on Hemp.
