Jason Day has no chill.
On the morning that The Open returned to Royal Portrush, Day once again went against tradition and opted for a garish fashion choice that quickly went viral.

“Wow, that is ugly,” one fan tweeted. “He’s trying to put everyone else off!” a second fan posted.
It requires a photo to truly do justice to Day’s latest sweater choice.
After drawing the ire of Masters officials in 2024 – Day was forced to remove a bold ‘ugly’ sweater in the middle of the tournament – the No. 30-ranked golfer in the world could again have issues at The Open.
Day, 37, wore a black sweater on Thursday that appeared to pay tribute to a king in a deck of cards, and retails for $435 (£325).
Day was grouped with Canada’s Taylor Pendrith and Denmark’s Jacob Skov Olesen, so he might have wanted to stand out in the first round.
Either way, it was easy to connect Day’s sweater on Thursday with his 2024 attire that did not go over well in Augusta.
He initially made news with balloon-type pants that went viral on social media.
The 13-time PGA Tour winner then one-upped himself with a bold sweater that was impossible to ignore, and clashed with the classic tradition normally associated with Augusta National Golf Club.

“It was a horrendous looking sweater,” one fan tweeted in 2024. “Honestly everything he’s wearing is absolutely awful.”
Much like Rickie Fowler in 2011 when he broke a strict Masters clothing rule and had to be told twice to fix his error, Day was corrected by the powers that be at Augusta.
“They asked me to take the vest off,” Day said.
“Respectfully, you do that, because it’s all about the tournament here, and I understand that.
“I respect the tournament. That’s what we’re here to do is try and play and win the Green Jacket.”
Skov Olesen holds an early lead at 4-under as The Open returned to Royal Portrush for the first time since 2019.
Day may have focused a little too much on his clothing for the first round.
He carded an opening 2-over par 73.
Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Shane Lowry are among the favourites to win the 2025 Open.
