The Kansas City Chiefs officially placed star quarterback Patrick Mahomes on their injured reserve list on Wednesday, December 17.
Mahomes suffered a serious knee injury during the Chiefs' Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and will miss the rest of Kansas City's 2025 campaign as he begins a lengthy recovery process that could threaten his availability next season.
On December 15, the Chiefs announced that Mahomes successfully underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee.
Journeyman backup Gardner Minshew is expected to take over as Kansas City's starting quarterback in the final weeks of the regular season.

The Chiefs were eliminated from playoff contention in Week 15, so Mahomes' absence won't affect Kansas City's ability to compete for another Super Bowl title.
Now set to play for nothing but their pride and draft position, the Chiefs will look to finish the regular season strong with Minshew under center.
