When will Michigan football hire its new head coach? While many fans are sitting on pins and needles hoping that it could happen sooner rather than later, the athletics department doesn't appear to be in a big hurry, more focused on getting the right hire rather than the fast one.
More gasoline can be thrown on the patience fire with interim head coach Biff Poggi reportedly telling signees that the plan is to have a new head coach by the month's end.
Via Larry Lage of the Associated Press:
Michigan interim football coach Biff Poggi had a Zoom call with the program’s signees and their parents just hours after Sherrone Moore was fired last week, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Monday.
Poggi told the players and their parents that athletic director Warde Manuel hoped to have a new coach hired by the end of the month, said the person, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share details from the call.
Michigan appears to be targeting Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer -- despite DeBoer stating twice now in a 24-hour period that he is not interested -- Arizona State's Kenny Dillingham, Washington's Jedd Fisch, and reportedly Missouri's Eliah Drinkwitz. However, at this juncture, given the denials out there, it's all speculative at this point and there's no concrete frontrunner.
Of course, if one of the aforementioned pulls out of the running officially, or in DeBoer's or Willingham's cases, if they sign contract extensions, it could create something of a domino effect, hastening a potential hire. If that were to happen, the timing element could change on a dime.
