Jay Bateman’s next stop is Lexington but the only question is when. Kentucky’s newly hired defensive coordinator will remain at Texas A&M through the College Football Playoff, officially taking over the Wildcats’ defense once the Aggies’ season comes to an end, whether that’s with a national championship or a postseason exit, according to Pete Nakos of On3.
Bateman, who has been serving as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator, will finish out his responsibilities in College Station before shifting full attention to Kentucky, where he replaces Brad White. White departed after the season to join Jon Sumrall’s staff in Florida, opening the door for a new voice to lead a defense that has been a cornerstone of Kentucky football in recent years.
Bateman arrives with extensive Power Four experience and a reputation for building aggressive, disciplined units. At Texas A&M, his defenses emphasized pressure, takeaways, and physicality while developing multiple NFL Draft picks across the defensive front and secondary. His coaching career stops include Florida, North Carolina, Army, and Ball State.
For Kentucky, Bateman’s hire represents both continuity and evolution. While the Wildcats have leaned on defense to stay competitive in the SEC, Bateman brings a fresh approach and postseason-tested experience.
Once Texas A&M’s playoff run concludes, Bateman will fully transition to Lexington, begin installing his system, and prepare Kentucky’s defense for the challenges ahead in the Power Four
