Dec. 9—RENVILLE — Head coach Matt Huhnerkoch was surprised by his team's record in 2024-25.
Last season marked an 11-win improvement for the Renville County West boys basketball team.
RCW, which was 18-8 overall and 11-5 in the Camden Conference, hopes it can be replicated.
That will be a tall task for the Jaguars, whose 18 wins last year were the most in school history..
RCW must fill the production of star guard and graduate Ryan Schrupp, who is currently a freshman at the NCAA Division III Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato.
Schrupp, an All-Area Third Team pick, had 20.8 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest last season.
"Veteran starters like Jon Driggs and Brayden Klaassen will be asked to take on bigger leadership and contribution roles," said Huhnerkoch, who is in his 15th season as head coach.
Driggs, a 6-foot-4 junior forward who is coming off an All-Camden season, averaged 12.9 points per game in his sophomore year. Klaassen, a 6-0 junior forward, posted 6.0 points per contest.
"Bench players like Humberto Ramirez will be asked to do more as a starter this season," Huhnerkoch said. "Size and depth will be hurdles for this squad and ball security and defense will be keys to success for this team."
Ramirez, a 5-9 sophomore guard, collected 5.1 points and 1.4 rebounds per game last year.
"Humberto is a talented guard with a high basketball IQ," Huhnerkoch said. "We look for him to take his game to the next level with a year of experience under his belt."
Drew Sagedahl and Brady Holwerda will serve as Huhnerkoch's assistant coaches.
Sagedahl, who graduated from Bethany Lutheran College in 2025, was a three-time All-Upper Midwest Athletic Conference pick, including First Team appearances in 2022-23 and 2024-25.
