J.P. Estrella will not play for Tennessee basketball against Tennessee State on Nov. 20 at Food City Center due to a bone bruise on his left knee.

The sophomore forward is day-to-day and will continue to be evaluated, UT announced before the No. 18 Vols (4-0) face Tennessee State (2-2) on Nov. 20 (7 p.m. ET, SEC Network+).

Sophomore guard Bishop Boswell also will not play for the third straight game. He did not play against North Florida with a right foot injury, but has missed the past two games with a left leg injury.

Estrella could miss 2-to-3 weeks, but the timeline is not definite. He left with an injury and did not return as No. 18 Tennessee (4-0) rolled 91-66 against Rice on Nov. 17. He rejoined his teammates on the bench in the middle of the second half with an ice pack on his left knee.

The 6-foot-11 forward was injured after battling for a rebound with a pair of Rice players in the final 90 seconds of the first half. He won it, then lost it, falling backward. Rice forward Stephen Giwa fell on Estrella’s lower leg, sending Estrella tumbling to the court and grabbing his left knee.

He rolled by the free-throw line in pain as Tennessee staffers checked on him before he was helped off the court, putting some weight on his left leg.

Barnes said afterward that the play was a “freaky thing" with how Giwa fell into Estrella.

Estrella, who had four points against Rice, has been on a tear to start the season. He averaged 17.3 points and 8.7 rebounds in the first three games since returning from a foot injury and surgery, which cost him all but three games in the 2024-25 season.

Estrella had a 23-point, 10-rebound game in UT's 99-66 win against North Florida on Nov. 12. He had 17 points and 11 rebounds against Northern Kentucky on Nov. 8, and 12 points and five rebounds against Mercer on Nov. 3.
