Enzo Fernandez reveals the role Chelsea asked him to play in the signing of Moises Caicedo

Enzo Fernandez has opened up on his connection with Moises Caicedo and the role he played in the midfielder joining Chelsea.

Fernandez withdrew from international duty due to pain in his knee, and has been recovering at Chelsea’s Cobham training base.

The Blues have got big games against Barcelona and Arsenal coming up at the end of the month, which they will want Fernandez available for.

Enzo Fernandez opens up on connection with Moises Caicedo

The World Cup winner joined Chelsea in January 2023 from Portuguese giants Benfica for a then British record of £106m.

Six months later the Blues would go and break the record again on another midfielder when they signed Caicedo from Brighton.

The duo are now one of the best midfield pairings in the league, and Fernandez has opened up on their connection and the role he played in Caicedo joining the club.

“The connection is that when I found out Chelsea wanted him, obviously I was the first to call him because, being South American, the club also asked me on their behalf to try to talk to Moi so that he would come and obviously I did and I wanted to bring in an incredible player like Moi who contributes a lot to the team,” he told Koora Break.

“We know what’s good, everyone knows what it is, and also the humility he has, right?

“Also in everyday life, a boy who always wants to learn, who tries to help you.

“The connection is very good, obviously much better now that the years are passing.

“We shared many moments off the field too, and honestly, I feel very comfortable with a great relationship and a great connection on the field.”

Chelsea tried to offer Romeo Lavia to Man United

Whilst Caicedo and Fernandez are settled in Chelsea’s midfield, the same can’t be said of Romeo Lavia, who is currently sidelined with a quad injury.

Lavia has made just 30 appearances for the Blues since arriving from Southampton in 2023, and he’s set to be out for at least a month with his latest set back.

If this continues Chelsea could have a decision to make at the end of the season, and they reportedly tried to offer Lavia as part of the deal for Alejandro Garnacho.
