South Africa were dealt a bitter blow just before their second ODI against England as Wiaan Mulder was forced out with injury.

However, it wasn’t for a run-of-the-mill issue.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ commentary, Natalie Germanos revealed the extent of Mulder’s ill health.

“Wiaan Mulder is not feeling well and we’re suspecting that it might even be kidney stones,” Germanos said.

“He’s being tended to and we’ll wait to hear on that.”

Mulder was replaced by Senuran Muthusamy.

The star all-rounder wasn’t the only change for the Proteas at Lord’s as Matthew Breetzke came in for Tony de Zorzi, who sustained an injury in the first ODI.

How did South Africa go in the first ODI?

It was South Africa who sprang a major upset in their series opener as they enjoyed a seven-wicket victory over England.

Aiden Markram was the hero with the bat for the visitors as he top scored with 86 off of 55 deliveries.

Mulder, who didn’t need to bat, took impressive figures of three wickets for 33 runs.

As for England, they endured a torrid day at the crease.

Jamie Smith top-scored for the hosts with 54 off of 48 balls.

But outside of Smith, no player scored more than 15 runs as England were bowled out for a measly 131 runs.

And without Smith’s runs, England lost nine wickets for an embarrassing 77 runs.

England skipper Harry Brook’s reaction to the loss

England skipper Harry Brook lamented his team’s performance and conceded they simply couldn’t get going.

“‘[The batting] wasn’t ideal,” Brook said.

“It wasn’t a great start to the series. It was just one of those bad days and we have to move on as quickly as possible.

“Everyone will hold their hands up and say they had a bad day, apart from [Smith] who batted really nicely. We just couldn’t get a partnership together.

“I thought we bowled nicely. Baker got a bit of tap at the start but the way we kept trucking in and giving 100 per cent was great to see. That’s what we ask from bowlers.

“We almost used it as a practice session late on with the game dead so it was good to see lads showing their skills.”
