Wrexham have reportedly opened talks with Rennes for midfielder Jordan James.

The Wales international could make a return to the Championship before the transfer window closes.

James, who has 20 caps for Wales to his name, has three years left on his contract with the Ligue 1 side having signed from Birmingham in August 2024.

Prior to that move, he made 95 Championship appearances, scoring nine goals from midfield.

Wrexham have identified the 21-year-old as their preferred target in the position.

It follows their rumoured interest in Southampton’s Will Smallbone.

According to Sky Sports, the Red Dragons are looking to strike a deal with Rennes for James.

He has yet to feature for the club in their opening two matches so far this season.

After being an unused sub against Marseille, James was completely left out of the squad for Sunday’s loss at Lorient.

His arrival would continue a busy summer of spending at the Racecourse Ground.

Phil Parkinson’s side have already broken their transfer record three times during the current window.

Meanwhile, they are the highest spenders in the division with ten new arrivals costing almost £24million combined.

Nathan Broadhead is their current record signing having joined from Ipswich in a deal that could rise to £10m.

Liberato Cacace and Lewis O’Brien previously held the distinction earlier this summer.

Addressing their business, Parkinson explained: “It’s a bit like when we were in the National League, we had to fast track quickly in terms of the quality level in the squad because we were up against established National League teams who had been in the division and building squads for a long time.

“Now we’re in the Championship, we’ve come up so quickly we’ve had to fast track the quality level as well.

“So it’s a similar scenario but it’s a more expensive one, but then coming up the divisions generates the money that has enabled us to do that.

“We’re a club always playing catch-up and to do that the recruitment has got to be quicker, and more of it, to try and make sure we’re competitive for this level.”

Despite those new signings, Wrexham remain winless on their return to the second tier.

Following three consecutive promotions, they are playing at the level for the first time since 1982.

Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday did see the club earn their first point of the season, though.

It followed a crushing late defeat to Southampton before a home loss against West Brom the following week.

Parkinson will be aiming to get his first win of the campaign away to Millwall on Saturday.
