Tommy Fleetwood has finally won his first ever PGA Tour title with the Englishman emerging victorious at the FedEx Cup.

The 34-year-old, who narrowly missed out on the top prize at the Fed Ex St.Jude Championship earlier this month, was classy throughout the four days as he won by three shots, finishing on -18.

His nearest rival was American Patrick Cantlay, who put Fleetwood under pressure at points, but never really looked like he would overtake the eventual champion.

The triumph at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia sees Fleetwood bank a whopping $10million (approximately £7.4m) as he claims his first PGA Tour title at the 164th attempt.

Southport-born Fleetwood has long been a household name in the sport and was runner-up at the US Open in 2018, but none of his 10 professional wins had occurred in America.

Fleetwood started the final round as joint leader, overcame a slight wobble midway through with Cantlay and world no.1 Scottie Scheffler hot on his heels.

But for the first time during a PGA Tour event, Fleetwood showed his composure to claim the victory that he and golf fans so craved.

Reacting to his win, Fleetwood said: “You just keep learning, don’t you? I think this one… there was the Travelers, there was Memphis…

“This wasn’t the most comfortable I’ve been because you start thinking of the others but I’ve had a great attitude throughout it all.

“I was a bit erratic at times but then I found my swing on the 11th and changed my routine…”

Fleetwood added; “I’m proud of what I’ve done before. Whether I’ve won or not I’ve still been proud of my career and where I’ve been so far knowing that I’ve still got a long way to go and a lot to learn.

“This doesn’t change that, really. This is hopefully one win, the first of many to come. You can’t win plenty if you don’t win the first one.

“I’m just so happy that I got it done, I’m happy with my work-ethic and I’ll continue to try and get better and be the best that I can be.

“It makes me a bit emotional. I’m always so lucky with the support that I get.

“I said this last month with the buzz that’s been around me when I’ve been in contention has been amazing.

“To get the support like that is just so special and I don’t want to lose it, everybody knows how grateful I am for it.

“I said we’ll do it together and I feel like we did. I’m so happy for me and everyone who supported me through all this.”

Fleetwood had been fifth in the list behind the likes of Ryder Cup teammate Rory McIlroy in second and leader Scottie Scheffler, but put himself in contention with a score of three-under-par on Saturday to set up a tantalising opportunity ahead of his final round.

A birdie at the second hole represented a fine start and even though it was followed by a bogey three holes later, Fleetwood regained his composure to secure back-to-back birdies before the turn.

When Fleetwood produced a bogey to start his back nine, nerves looked set to take over, but he kept his cool to send down another birdie on the 12th.

A fifth birdie of the round at the 13th once again opened a three-shot gap to Cantlay, who would soon bogey again to leave Fleetwood almost home and dry.

Fleetwood dropped a shot at 15 and despite Corey Conners’ extraordinary eight-under 62, there would be no denying the popular Englishman.

A simple putt for par on the final hole was followed by Fleetwood letting out an enormous roar as he toasted his first PGA Tour win at the 164th time of asking.
